Charlotte Harris - Biography
Charlotte Harris was born in Ashford, Kent in 1981 and currently works from her studio in Folkestone. She studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, during which time she worked as a studio assistant for the artist Tom Wood, whose work is featured in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. At the age of only 21, she won the BP Portrait Award in 2003 with a painting of her grandmother and turned professional later that year after graduating with a 1st class Honours degree in Fine Art. The following year she exhibited in the Hunting Art Prize and at the Hart Gallery in Islington, London. Her painting of Dame Vivien Duffield, as part of the BP Award, is part of the National Portrait Gallery’s primary collection.
Further notable commissions include portraits of the Rt. Rev. Richard Harries, Bishop of Oxford, unveiled in April 2006 and Sir Peter Jonas, the Staatsintendant of the Bavarian State Opera, unveiled in July 2006 at a ceremony in Munich. Commissioned by the Leeds Metropolitan University in 2007 as part of their centenary celebrations, Charlotte portrayed the outgoing sabbatical vice-presidents and president from the Student Union, all of whom have made a significant and valuable contribution during their time in office. Charlotte’s recent commissions feature Lord David Rowe-Beddoe and Frank Brake.
